Why us

What went wrong
last time.

Beyond The Brush is a locally owned and operated company. Sunny owns it, has been in the local painting trade for over 20 years, and is on the job himself rather than behind a desk. Here is what people tell us went wrong the last time they had someone in, and what we do differently.

“The roller marks and patchy bits showed up a week later.”

That is one thin coat over unprepped wall. We fill, sand and prime first, then put on two full coats, three if the colour change needs it.

“They got paint on my floors and left a mess behind.”

Furniture is moved or covered and proper drop cloths go down before a lid comes off a tin. We clean up at the end of every day, not just at the end of the job.

“The price went up once they had started.”

You get the scope in writing before we start. The number we quote is the number you pay.

“The crew disappeared for a week in the middle.”

Sunny owns the company and is on your job. You are not handed off to a subcontractor you never met.

Our standard

What we do
on every job.

This is what we do on every interior job, whether it is one bedroom or a whole house.

Interior Painting: our standard of work

Backed in writing

  1. We protect the room first. Furniture is moved or covered and floors get proper drop cloths before a lid comes off a tin.
  2. Holes and dents get filled and sanded flat. Painting over a dent leaves you a dent in a new colour.
  3. Glossy and previously oiled surfaces get scuffed and primed. Paint needs something to grip. On a slick surface it will not hold, no matter how good the paint is.
  4. Edges are cut in by hand. We tape where tape gives a better line and cut freehand where it does. What matters is the line, not the method.
  5. Two full coats, three if the colour change needs it. We do not stretch one thin coat and call the wall covered.
  6. Walls first, then trim and doors. The last clean line we cut is the one you end up looking at.
  7. We clean up at the end of every day. Not just at the end of the job.
  8. We walk the finished rooms with you. You get the written 5-year warranty before we leave.

If we miss any of it, tell us and we come back. Every job carries a written 5-year warranty and we are insured to $2,000,000.

Process

How an interior
job runs.

  1. 01

    Walkthrough and estimate

We come by, look at the rooms with you and give you a free estimate with a real timeline in it.

  2. 02

    Choose colours and sheens

We help you choose, and test swatches in your own lighting before you commit to anything.

  3. 03

    Cover, protect and prep

Furniture covered, surfaces filled and sanded, edges masked. This is most of the work.

  4. 04

    Prime where it is needed

Bare filler, stains and slick surfaces get primed so the finish coat behaves.

  5. 05

    Ceilings, walls and trim

Ceilings, then walls, then trim and doors, in that order.

  6. 06

    Clean up and walk it

We put the room back, walk the job with you, and hand over the warranty in writing.

Questions

What people ask
before booking.

How long will my rooms be out of use?
Most single rooms are a day. A full interior depends on the size of the house and how much prep the walls need. We work room by room so you keep the rest of your home, and we tell you which rooms are off limits each day.
Do I need to move out?
No. We have very rarely had a customer need to leave. We section the work so you keep living in the house.
Do you move the furniture?
Yes, we move what we reasonably can and cover whatever stays. Anything genuinely fragile or valuable we would rather you move yourself.
What about the smell?
Most interior paint now is low odour and water based. We keep air moving while we work, and in most cases you can use the room the same evening.
Can you match a colour that is already on the wall?
Usually. We can take a sample and match it. If an exact match is not possible we will tell you before we start rather than after.
What happens if something needs a touch-up later?
You call us and we come back. Interior work carries our written 5-year warranty.
