You can roll fresh paint straight onto a peeling fence. It will look good for a season and then peel in exactly the same places.

Backed in writing

  1. Peeling paint is scraped back to a surface the new coat can hold. This is most of the labour on a fence, and it is what the estimate is really for.
  2. We are clear about which sides are included. Both sides is a real difference in work, so it is spelled out in the estimate rather than assumed.
  3. Bare and weathered wood gets primed before colour. Grey, sun-worn timber will drink a finish coat and leave you with a patchy fence.
  4. Loose boards and popped nails get sorted first. A fence that moves cracks its own finish.
  5. Gardens, beds and lawn are covered before we start. Fences usually have planting on both sides of them.
  6. Posts and rails are coated, not just the pickets facing the street. The parts you see from your own garden get the same coat.
  7. We clean up the scrapings. Old paint chips do not get left in your flower beds.
  8. We check the gate still swings and latches before we leave. A freshly coated gate that binds on its post is not finished work.

    Walk it and measure

    We measure the run, look at the condition and tell you what including both sides would mean.

    Scrape back the coat

    Failing coating comes off and edges get feathered so the join does not telegraph.

  3. 03

    Repairs and fasteners

    Loose boards refixed, popped nails set, obvious problems flagged.

  4. 04

    Prime the bare wood

    Everywhere the scraping went down to timber.

  5. 05

    Colour coats go on

    Pickets, rails, posts and caps, in the colour you picked.

  6. 06

    Gate, cleanup, warranty

    Gate rehung and checked, scrapings cleared, warranty in writing.

What people ask
before booking.

Do you paint both sides of the fence?
We can. It is close to double the work, so we make it clear in the estimate exactly which sides the price covers rather than leaving it to be argued about later.
My fence is peeling badly. Is it worth painting?
Usually yes, as long as the wood underneath is still sound. The scraping takes longer on a fence in that condition, and the estimate will reflect that honestly.
Can you match my neighbour's colour or my house trim?
Yes. We can take a sample from the existing coat and match to it.
What happens with the gate?
The gate gets the same treatment as the rest of the fence, and we check that it still swings and latches properly once the coating has gone on.
Will you get paint on my plants?
No. Beds and lawn are covered before we start, and we clear up the scrapings rather than leaving old paint chips in your garden.
How long does a fence take?
Most residential fences are one to two days, depending on the length and how much scraping the old coat needs.
