Deck Staining & Painting
A deck is the hardest working surface on your property. It takes sun, rain and everybody's feet, and it is horizontal, so water sits on it instead of running off. Coating one properly starts with getting it clean and genuinely dry.

Why us
What went wrong
last time.
Beyond The Brush is a locally owned and operated company. Sunny owns it, has been in the local painting trade for over 20 years, and is on the job himself rather than behind a desk. A deck is the hardest working surface on your property, and it is where a rushed coating fails first.
“I had it done two years ago and it already looks grey.”
Usually the boards were still holding water when it was coated. We wash the deck and let it dry properly, which takes as long as it takes.
“The stairs turn into a skating rink when it rains.”
We can add a non-slip additive to the treads and walking surfaces. Just ask when we quote it.
“There are a couple of boards I think are soft.”
We check for rot and flag it before quoting the coating, and we can replace boards as part of the job.
“Who is actually going to turn up?”
Sunny, who owns the company. Locally owned and operated, not a franchise sending whoever is free.
Our standard
What we do
on every job.
Most failed deck finishes were applied to wood that was still holding water. This is the order that avoids that.
Deck Painting & Staining: our standard of work
- The deck is washed and then left to dry properly. Coating damp wood is the single most common reason deck finishes fail here.
- Old flaking coating is scraped and sanded back to sound wood. A new coat over a failing one fails at the same speed.
- Popped nails and screws get set before anything is applied. They are easier to deal with now than through a fresh finish.
- Soft and rotten boards get flagged before we quote the coating. You hear about a bad board from us before we coat it, not after.
- We use the finish the wood actually needs. Stain where the grain should show, solid coating where the wood is past showing off. We will tell you which after we look at it.
- Stairs and railings get the same attention as the deck floor. They take the most traffic and the most hands.
- Furniture, planters and siding are moved or covered first. Along with anything else that would rather not be stained.
- Nothing goes back down until the coating has hardened. Putting the furniture back onto a soft finish undoes the last two days of work.
If we miss any of it, tell us and we come back. Every job carries a written 5-year warranty and we are insured to $2,000,000.
Process
How a deck
job runs.
-
01
Walk the deck with you
We look at the boards, check for soft spots and tell you what the deck actually needs.
-
02
Wash the whole deck
The whole deck is cleaned down, including between the boards.
-
03
Let the boards dry
Usually a couple of days depending on weather. We do not skip this.
-
04
Scrape and sand back
Failing coating comes off, fasteners get set, rough grain gets sanded.
-
05
Stain or solid coat
Stain or solid coating, applied to the boards, stairs, railings and posts.
-
06
Walk it and warranty
Full walkthrough, furniture back where it was, warranty in writing.
