Painter brushing fresh coat over peeling siding on the side of a house

Exterior Painting

Exterior Painting

Siding, trim, doors and railings across the Lower Mainland. Exterior paint here has to survive a wet winter, and it only does that when the surface underneath is clean, dry and sound before the first coat.

Why us

What went wrong
last time.

Beyond The Brush is a locally owned and operated company. Sunny owns it, has been in the local painting trade for over 20 years, and is on the job himself rather than behind a desk. Exterior work is where shortcuts show up fastest. These are the ones we hear about most.

Painter scraping and prepping an old picket fence before painting

“It started peeling after one winter.”

Almost always because it went on over dirt, chalk or damp wood. We wash the house, scrape back to a sound edge and prime bare wood before any colour.

“They painted straight over the rotten bits.”

We flag soft wood and failed caulking before we quote the coating, not after. Covering rot just hides it for a season.

“My garden was wrecked by the time they left.”

Beds, walkways and driveways are covered before we start, and the scrapings get cleaned up rather than left in the soil.

“Nobody could tell me if they were insured.”

We carry $2,000,000 in liability insurance and will send the certificate before anyone goes up a ladder.

Our standard

What we do
on every job.

Exterior work lives or dies on what happens before the paint. This is the order we follow on every house.

Exterior Painting: our standard of work

Backed in writing

  1. We wash the house first. Dirt, chalk and mildew come off before anything goes on. Paint applied over them is already failing.
  2. Loose and peeling paint is scraped back to a sound edge. Feathered so you do not see the join through the new coat.
  3. Bare wood gets primed the same day it is exposed. Wood left open overnight in this climate takes on moisture.
  4. Failed caulking is cut out and replaced. Caulking over old failed caulking buys you one season.
  5. We watch the forecast and will not coat damp surfaces. We would rather move a day than trap moisture under a finish coat.
  6. Gardens, walkways and driveways are covered before we start. And uncovered at the end of each day.
  7. Two coats on the body, hand-cut lines on the trim. The trim lines are what people see from the street.
  8. We walk the whole exterior with you from the ground. Including the elevations nobody sees from the street, which is where a rushed exterior job shows first.

If we miss any of it, tell us and we come back. Every job carries a written 5-year warranty and we are insured to $2,000,000.

Questions

What people ask
before booking.

When is the best time of year to paint outside?
Spring through early autumn is the reliable window on the coast. It is worth getting an estimate in before the weather turns.
Can you paint if it rains?
Not onto damp surfaces. We plan around the forecast and will move a day rather than seal moisture in under a coat.
How long does a house take?
Most homes run several days to about a week, depending on size, height and how much scraping the old coat needs. You get a real timeline with the estimate.
Do you paint stucco?
Yes. Stucco needs a clean, sound surface and the right product, and we prep it as carefully as we prep siding.
Will my garden be protected?
Yes. Beds, walkways and driveways are covered before we start, and we clean up scrapings rather than leaving old paint chips in your garden.
What if it starts peeling next year?
It should not. If it does, call us and we come back. Exterior work carries the same written 5-year warranty.
